Autograph letter signed from Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby, London, to an unnamed Lord [manuscript], 1677/8 March 5.

Discuses the "dispatch" of Sidney Godolphin. Godolphin, who likely delivered the letter himself, "is so fully instructed in all things, & directed to take y[ou]r assistance in euery thing, that hee will informe you of all wee know here. I take the quiett or endlesse disturbence of Christendome to depend vpon the Prince & Pentioners management of this affaire, w[hi]ch I beleeue is yett in theire power to steere, but will not bee so twenty daies longer."

Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby (1631/32-1712), son of a Yorkshire baronet, entered Parliament as member for York in 1661, served Charles II in a series of adminstrative positions, and was made Lord High Treasurer and Earl of Danby in 1674. In 1678, he pressed for the investigation of the Popish Plot, but the Commons impeached him in December of that year for his involvement in the French "subsidies" to Charles II.
